Access to the nitrate negatives is restricted; researchers must use the digital access
copies. Handling of the glass negatives and lantern slides requires the assistance of an
archivist. Otherwise, there are no other access restrictions on the materials, and the
collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law.
The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel,
privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin
Statutes 19.21-19.39).
The Richard and Ethel Herzfeld Foundation donated the bulk of this collection to the
Library Council of Southeastern Wisconsin's Archives Committee in December 1994. In August
2005 the Library Council of Southeastern Wisconsin transferred legal ownership of the
collection to the Archives. Carmen Haberman donated a small collection of additional
records (accession 2003-017) to the Archives in September 2003. The Herzfeld Foundation
donated some additional materials in October 2016 (accession 2016-020).
Jessica Sawinski, Diana Giordano, Suzanne Krause, Jason Klitgaard, and Christel Maass
processed this collection at the Archives from December 2005-February 2006.
In February 2011, Bob Jaeger removed 431 nitrate negatives from the collection and placed
them with other nitrate negatives. These constituted box 6 in its entirety. In November
2011, Rachel Curtis (supervised by Bob Jaeger) rehoused a tintype and moved it from box 7
to box 15.
Christel Maass minimally processed accession 2016-020 in October 2016.
