Juan Alvarez Cuauhtémoc Photographic Collection of El Movimiento in Milwaukee's Latino Community, 1968-1971

Biography/History

The newspaper La Guardia was co-founded by several Milwaukee individuals, including Juan Alvarez, Roberto Hernandez, and Lalo Valdez in August of 1969. Many of these same individuals were founding members of Latin American Union for Civil Rights (LAUCR), a Milwaukee area community organization which sought to advance civil rights for Latinos in areas of migration, education, hiring, and the media. La Guardia was formed to fill a perceived gap in the mainstream media regarding coverage of the Latino Milwaukee community.

In the spring of 1969, Juan Alvarez Cuauhtémoc exhibited many of his paintings (shown photographed in this collection) at the Charles Allis Art Museum in Milwaukee.
