Subgrp: 7. American Archivist, 1936-2012
Scope and Content Note: This record subgroup consists of records relating to the production of the American Archivist, SAA's journal. The editor's records date from 1936 and anticipate the publication of the first issue in January 1938. Records of the book reviews editor date from 1942, although the American Archivist has devoted sections to announce and review publications relevant to archives administration since its first issue. Records of the advertising editor date from 1948, when the American Archivist first included advertisements among its pages. The bulk of the record subgroup consists of documentation pertaining to the editorial process and includes manuscripts submitted for publication, evaluations of manuscripts by the editorial board, the editors' summaries of board evaluations, editor-author correspondence.
Arrangement of the Materials: This record subgroup was originally arranged into groups that largely corresponded to the terms of American Archivist editors. Sub-subgroups 6, 7, and 13 collectively group the records of book review editors, advertising editors, and special issues editors, respectively. Sub-subgroup 12 collectively groups articles submitted for publication from 1971 to 1984.

Following SAA's donation of its archives to UW-Milwaukee in April 2001, the SAA archivist discontinued arrangement of this record subgroup by individual and collective editors. Additions to this group are now arranged as four major series: administrative files, correspondence, articles accepted, and articles rejected.
Access Restrictions: Identity-specific evaluation records are restricted for forty years after the date of the document or following the death of the evaluator, whichever occurs first. Unpublished manuscripts are restricted for forty years.
