: The Kuryer Publishing Company records consist of both business records and
correspondence to the publishing company requesting assistance for a host of problems.
The files are arranged alphabetically by subject heading. Extensive correspondence with
various Polish organizations documents the Kuryer Polski's role as forum for North
America's Polonia. The records are in English and Polish.
The business records
consist of ledgers, stock holder's indexes, general correspondence, union contracts and
advertising accounts and commissions. The ledgers, with a few gaps, cover the entire
existence of the company. The indexes of stockholders list the purchasers of Kuryer
stock in 1906, 1912 and 1915. Particularly well documented is the Kuryer's continuing
struggle for solvency throughout its existence. Its battle to maintain operations are
indicative of the problems that faced the foreign language press in the United States as
a whole.
Subscribers solicited the Kuryer's assistance in solving a myriad of
problems. One irate husband sought the Kuryer's help in deporting his wife's suitor.
Especially poignant are letters from Polish soldiers interned in Hungary during the
Second World War.
Extensive correspondence documents both the cordial and the
often stormy relationship between the Kuryer and various Polish organizations. Of
particular interest is the law suit that the Polish Roman Catholic Union filed against
the Kuryer in 1918.
Fragmentary material concerning the family that owned the
Kuryer Publishing Company includes Wacaw Kruszka's copyright to his "History of Poles in
North America" and condolences on his death, and correspondence concerning Professor
Zwierzchowski's suspenseful flight from the invading German army in September of
1939.
Although this collection consists of only partial records of the Kuryer
Publishing Company, the material is especially valuable for both documenting the demise
of the ethnic press and for a study of inter-war immigration policies. In addition, the
collection possesses valuable genealogical material.
