UW-Extension Center for Community Economic Development Records, 1965-1992

Scope and Content Note

The records of the center divide into three major subject categories: Goals 2000 and Greater Milwaukee Futures Forum, the Harambee program, and the general records.

Goals 2000 was a community development project for the city of Milwaukee, primarily in the early 1980's. The Greater Milwaukee Futures Forum was a continuation of Goals 2000. Both programs were attempts to create viable plans for the city's future, involving many different organizations in the community, including the center. The records document the center's involvement in the projects, especially education programs.

The Harambee Project had three goals: to improve the delivery of services in Milwaukee's inner center; build a grass-roots community organization; and develop a model citizen's ombudsman advocate. The records thoroughly document the center's efforts to provide leadership in the project, especially in creating a citizen's ombudsman, improvement in health care delivery, and repairs of homes.

The general records of CUCD reflect its continued attempts to better the Milwaukee community through education and development of urban resourses. The files include courses, papers, reports, and seminars created by Belden Paulson, Dan Folkman, Claire Halverson, Reuben Harpole and Eugene Thuot. The center had a very hands on approach to urban planning and spent much of its resources on changing the specified urban areas. It hosted many regional or national seminars and projects focusing on urban goals. Among the specialized areas of research and teaching were energy conservation, multi-culturalism, and community development.
