The Milwaukee State Teachers College's Publicity Department became the News Bureau by 1952
and the News Services Office in 1953. After the creation of the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Office of News Services was created in 1957 and later placed under
the authority of the Assistant Chancellor of University Relations. It was called News
Service (1957-1970), News and Publications (1971-1977), Office of News Services (1978-1986),
News Services and Publications (1987-1999), and University Communications & Media
Relations (2000- ). The office's main responsibility was to document UWM's public image and
create press releases.
