UW-Extension Records, 1896-1988

Biography/History

Although some classes were offered in Milwaukee by the University of Wisconsin as early as 1892, the extension did not establish a Milwaukee office until 1907. In 1923 freshman and sophomore extension courses were authorized by the Board of Regents. In 1928 the UW Extension opened the Milwaukee Center at 6th and State Streets and in 1937 some graduate courses were offered. In September 1941 graduate courses leading to advanced degrees were first offered. By fall 1955 a full program of freshman and sophomore courses were offered, as well as graduate work in engineering, commerce, and social work. The graduate classes were taught by Madison faculty. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Extension Center and the Wisconsin State College-Milwaukee merged on May 12, 1956 to form the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Extension Division, at that time, was responsible for off-campus activities and typically non-credit adult education offerings not under the jurisdiction of UWM. During the early 1960s, extension activities were reorganized and in 1965, the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Wisconsin-General Extension, and Radio and Television Services combined to form a University Extension. In 1968, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee appointed an assistant chancellor for Milwaukee extension activities and in 1974 the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Division of Urban Outreach and the UW Extension-Milwaukee was formed. Beginning in 1980 Chancellor Frank Horton sought to integrate UW System non-credit Extension programs based in Milwaukee into the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1985 most general extension units located on UW System campuses were integrated administratively and programmatically with their local campuses. Several UWM-based operations joined to form the Division of Urban Outreach and Continuing Education.
