The Office of Student Affairs was established in 1956 when UWM was created. The head of the
office was officially called the Dean of Student Affairs, but was often informally called
the Dean of Students until 1974. The official Office of the Dean of Students was established
in 1974 following the resignation of David W. Robinson as Dean of Student Affairs. Between
1974-1979, the Dean of Students reported to the Assistant Chancellor for Student Services
and Special Programs. After 1979, the Dean reported to the Assistant Chancellor for Student
Affairs.
Effective July 1, 1994, Student Organization Advising and Resources separated from the
Office of Student Life.
