UW-Milwaukee Office of the Chancellor Records, 1933-2017

Container Title
Subseries: Event Files, 1998-2003

Alternate Format

Records from this subseries may be available in both paper and electronic formats. There is not a 1-to-1 correspondence between electronic and paper folder headings, and each format may contain different types of documentation as described in the scope and content note. As such, researchers should be sure to consult both paper and electronic files where applicable to obtain the full picture of these events.

Scope and Content Note

Files relating to the public and private events at which Chancellor Zimpher spoke or otherwise presided. These files usually contain a brief summary of the events in question, the speeches given by the Chancellor at the event, and copies of any presentation made. Most of these files pertain to routine events, such as the annual faculty/staff awards ceremony, presentations to the Faculty Senate and the UW Board of Regents, background information on Zimpher's WUWM appearances, and the Winter and Spring commencement addresses. Zimpher also spoke on a regular basis to local organizations, such as the YWCA, Milwaukee Rotary, United Way, and the Greater Milwaukee Committee; most of these presentations served to promote the activities of UWM, in particular its implementation of the Milwaukee Idea.

In addition to routine events, Zimpher also spoke at or prepared background information for a number of one-time or irregularly-occurring events of potential interest to researchers, including:

  • Prominent speakers at UWM , including Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, President George W. Bush, Nina Totenberg, Jules Feiffer, and Governors Scott McCallum and Jim Doyle.
  • Special events on or near campus , such as UWM Night at Miller Park, the unveiling of the new UWM logo, the UWM Hall of Fame Induction, the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Golda Meir Library, and the Grand Opening of the LGBT Resource Center.
  • Responses to local, national, and international events and relationships , including the events of September 11, 2001, interinstitutional agreements with universities in Germany and Japan, and State of Israel Bonds.

Many of the event files have both a paper and electronic version. The paper versions of the files often include margin notes written by Zimpher or other staff and thus may more accurately reflect the content of the speech or presentation actually delivered. The electronic files may include documents not easily reproduced in paper form, such as associated spreadsheets and charts, PowerPoint presentations, or audio-visual materials related to the event in question.

Arrangement of the Materials: Files in this series are arranged chronologically by date of event. Because of the volume of files in this subseries, individual folders have not been described below; box descriptions indicate the range of dates of the events included in that box.
Other Finding Aids

Text files containing folder-level listings of the files in this subseries are available in the electronic case file for the Office of the Chancellor; the revised paths for each electronic folder are retained to allow researchers to browse by year as well as by folder title.
