In 1956, at the time of the merger creating UWM, Herman Kluge was chairman of the
Department of Physical Education. In 1976 the department's name was changed to the Dept. of
Physical Education, Recreation and Health Education (PERHE). This department was responsible
for the administration of the J. Martin Klotsche Center for physical education completed in
1977. Ward K. Gates was chairman of the department at the time the center was built. In 1979
the department transferred from the School of Education to the School of Allied Health
Professions.
