Access Restrictions

The unclassified personnel files in boxes 23-25, accession 1999-059, accession 2006-070, and accession 2021-016 are restricted in accordance with UWM Personnel File Policy S-42. Access is regulated by Section III.A.2 and III.A.3.

There are no access restrictions on the rest of the collection, which is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law.

Use Restrictions

The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

Acquisition Information

The provenance of the records is unclear. Many of the records in the collection were created or compiled by the director and various members of the library staff. It is not known if particular records were brought together by the director or if they were separated from other files by library or archives staff. The records, whatever their provenance, were placed together under the library by the Archives Department staff sometime before 1989. When reprocessing began in 1993, it was decided to leave the existing organization intact rather than to possibly confuse the provenance even more. The library transferred another accession (accession 1992-030) in April 1993. Several items from the 1993 Fromkin Lecture were added to the collection in February 1994. Boxes 26-27 (accession 1996-027) were added in March 1997. Accession 1996-040 was transferred in April 1997; accession 1996-047 in May 1997; and accession 2002-029 in May 2002. The Office of the Director transferred a small amount of material to the Archives in August 2008. The Assistant to the Director transferred accession 2008-022 to the Archives in October 2008. Materials transferred piecemeal from the Director's Office in 2008-2010 were retroactively converted to accessions 2008-042, 2009-023, 2009-024, and 2009-050 in March 2010. Linda Kopp transferred accession 1998-055 in January 1998. Dawn Lee-Vue transferred accession 2005-007 in August 2005, accession 2006-070 in June 2007, accession 2007-007 in July 2007, and accession 2011-008 in Aguust 2011. The UWM Libraries transferred accession 2011-033 in January 2012 and accession 2013-010 in August 2013. Accession 2010-045 was transferred by an unknown individual in April 2011. Accession 2012-044 was transferred by an unknown individual in February 2013. Tim Ericson, Assistant Library Director for Archives and Special Collections, transferred accession 2000-037 in January 2000. Michael Doylen transferred accession 2015-030 to the Archives in late 2015. Special Collections transferred several posters (accession 2016-026) to the Archives in January and February 2017.

Processing Information

Kevin Corbitt processed parts of the collection in 1991. Mark A. Vargas processed twenty-four processed and unprocessed series in March through April 1993. Larry Kellneor processed boxes 26-27 in March 1997. Christel Maass added accessions 1996-040 and 1996-047 in October 1997 (boxes 28-29). Leslie Heinrichs and Charles Kempker processed box 34 in May 2002. Jeremy Brett added 1999-059 and 2003-092 (personnel files) to the collection in November 2006. Brad Houston added some material from the Archives 'dribble file' in August 2008. Allen Ramsey added accession 2008-022 to the collection in June 2009 (Brad Houston supervised). Brad Houston added some additional material from the 'dribble file' in September 2009 and in January 2010. Charles Welborn processed additional material from the 'dribble file' in August 2012. Hayley Jackson updated the finding aid to include information about accessions 1998-055, 1999-059, 2005-007, 2006-016, 2006-070, 2007-007, 2009-014, 2009-023, 2009-024, 2009-050, 2010-045, 2011-008, 2011-033, 2012-022, 2012-044, and 2013-010 in November 2014. Brad Houston supervised processing of accessions 2008-042 and part of 2009-050 between 2012-2013. Brad Houston processed additional material in December 2014. Christel Maass processed accession 2000-037 in May 2015 (boxes 47-48). Christel Maass minimally processed accession 2015-030 in February 2016. Christel Maass separated AV materials from amid the paper records in January 2017. Brad Houston completed processing accession 2009-050 in January 2017. Christel Maass added accession 2016-026 to the collection in January 2017. Christel Maass processed accessions 1998-055, 2005-007, 2006-016, 2007-007, 2009-014, 2009-023, 2009-024, 2010-045, 2011-008, 2011-003, 2012-022, 2015-030 in March 2017. Ashlie Biddle added 5 videocassettes (24-28) to Box 44 in May 2017. Phyllis Reske added items to boxes 40, 41, 52, and 54 in August 2017. Christel Maass processed all accession 2006-070 records except for the personnel files (box 18) from April to October 2017. James Pride minimally processed accession 2021-016 in December 2022. Shiraz Bhathena integrated a report previously minimally processed in the Chancellor's collection in April 2023.

In November 2009, the name of the collection was changed from Golda Meir Library, Office of the Director to University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries, Office of the Director to reflect the office's most recent official name.
