Administrative/Restriction Information

Access Restrictions

Handling of the glass negatives requires the assistance of an archivist. There are no other access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law.

Use Restrictions

The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

Acquisition Information

The collection was integrated from numerous smaller accessions, and the acquisition source and date of the accessions is unknown, although most were transferred to the Archives before 1989. Before 1991, the staff removed photos from archival and manuscript collections, but no records were kept on these separations. Photographs are no longer separated from the archival and manuscript collections. Nancy Warner of University Communications and Media Relations transferred additional photographs to the Archives in April 2005 (accession 2004-058). Polly Kaczmarek donated some additional materials in November 2014.

Processing Information

Mark Shelstad processed the collection from July through December 1992 at the Archives. Amelia Klem reprocessed the collection from May to June 2002. Diana Giordano processed the 2004-058 accession in June 2006. Christel Maass added an oversize photograph (oversize folder 1) to the collection in June 2009. Brad Houston processed additional materials in December 2014 and January 2015.

In March 2010, the name of this collection was changed from UW-Milwaukee Photographic Services Records to UW-Milwaukee Photographs Collection to accurately reflect the provenance of this artificial collection.

In fall 2011, the safety film negatives in the collection were rehoused in acid-neutral sleeves and moved to more medium-appropriate boxes by Matt Eidem and Nick Roche (Brad Houston supervised). Molly Whiteside, supervised by Christel Maass, added some miscellaneous items to the collection in September 2015. Brad Houston added two oversized aerial photos of campus received from the American Geographic Society Library to the collection in February 2017.
