Custodial History

The earlier records of this collection were housed at different locations since their creation including: the National Archives, the Smithsonian Institution, and finally the American Philosophical Society. These records, which constitute what was formerly known as "Part I" (boxes 1-140), were roughly organized by the various venues which held them.

Acquisition Information

The collection was transferred and donated to the American Geographical Society Library in 1996. The records that comprised "Part II" were also donated by the AAG at this time.

Processing Information

Along with several additions of records, "Part II" was processed over the course of several years by Norman Stewart, beginning in 2000. In the fall of 2014, Bob Jaeger, Sarah Steinbacher, and Will Tchakirides created this finding aid, combined both parts, and renumbered the boxes accordingly.
