Biography/History

The American Geographical Society was founded in 1851 by a group of prominent New Yorkers who included wealthy philanthropists, historians, publishers, and editors to promote the use and collection of geographical information. The Library of the American Geographical Society provided many geographic services to its patrons. It offered numerous publications on the subject and also answered inquiries on geographical topics. Among its many functions, the AGS helped prepare explorers, support expeditions, conduct research, and present lectures, all on an array of geographical matters. They assisted various government agencies, businesses, organizations, universities, as well as the general public.
