Biography/History

Theodore Habhegger (1830-1901) was born in Switzerland and came to America in 1849. He learned wagon and carriage making at the Reading & Kingsley shop, which Habhegger bought in 1856. The Theo. Habhegger Co. specialized in building wagons for grocers, brewers, butchers, and other local businesses. The company was passed onto his sons Theodore F. (1867-1932) and Carl G. (1872-1912), and later his grandson Theodore C. (1899-1965). Other family members worked in the business as well. At this point the company was now specializing in automobile repairs, rather than wagon making. The company stills operates today under the name Habhegger Wheel & Axle, but is no longer affiliated with the Habhegger family.
