Biography/History

Alfred Julius Breitwish (1871-1956) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1888, he started a commercial photography studio in Milwaukee with Frank Bishop, whom he bought out a few years later. Breitwish photographed everything from studio portraits to rural scenes, including Buffalo Bill Cody when he toured the state in 1896. In 1895, he married Victoria Gargen and they had three sons together. His sons later joined him in his photography business, which was then known as A.J. Breitwish & Sons. Breitwish was a member of several clubs and organizations such as the Rotary Club, Knights of Pythias, Masons, and the Wisconsin Photographers' Association.
