World War I Military Portrait Collection, 1917-1919

Scope and Content Note

The photographs in the collection are predominantly in black and white (though many have faded over the years), however some of the formal portraits were developed in sepia tones. The photos range in size from small snapshots of 2” x 3” to larger 8” x 10” formal portraits. The collection is divided between informal snapshots of soldiers at their homes in Milwaukee and the surrounding area, or photos of the soldiers overseas. Many of the photos from overseas were of the men and women in their camps or on leave. The majority of these photos were printed on postcard stock. There are also a large number of formal portraits in the collection. These portraits were of officers and individuals who were most likely of a comparatively wealthier status. Alternate spellings of names are occasionally provided.
