Series: 5. Correspondence, 1920-2011
: The National Secretary (NS) was a paid position central to the daily
operations of the Socialist Party at the national level. This person handled
all incoming/outgoing correspondence both internal and external, fulfilling
informational requests from the public, attending meetings, and taking and
distributing meeting minutes. At times there was also an additional paid
office staff member under the NS. In the early 20th century the NS position
was titled the Executive Secretary and was also assisted by an
Administrative Secretary, but the names changed sometime in the 1950s. While
this previous correspondence organization system was kept, additional
correspondence materials were added. Some correspondence from prominent
members has been pulled out and filed by names. Many of the same members
over time held a variety of officer positions including NS. The NS position
frequently turned over as it was a high stress position and interim or
temporary NSs were regularly added. Various other Party members and officers
also assisted temporarily over the years. As a result, a definitive list of
those who held this position is difficult. Frank Zeidler, National
Chairperson for some years, while the National Office was located in
Milwaukee, regularly helped answer general NS mail.
: The correspondence series initially was partially organized chronologically
under the Socialist Party's National Secretary. It consists of original or
copies of letters, memos and notes generated or received by the NS. The NS
was regularly copied on letters to the main governing committees such as the
NC and the NAC as well as state and local Party reports and correspondence.
There is also a large correspondence section from the Socialist Party of
Wisconsin (SPWI), including Milwaukee, also consisting of original or copies
of letters and memos received or sent by the SPWI. It is organized similarly
as just general internal and external correspondence to the Party or its
officers. Kendrick (Rick) Kissell’s correspondence was previously separated.
Kissell held officer positions in the Socialist Party of Wisconsin,
Socialist International and as NS from roughly 1978-1983. This
correspondence is mainly prior to him as NS and is not related to his time
in that position.
