Socialism arose in the late 1800s from the writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich
Engels. It sought to oppose capitalism and promoted a system with a social ownership
of the means of production. While there are numerous different theories and
movements associated with it, socialism primarily advocated for citizen equality.
One such supporter was the socialist politician Frank Zeidler (1912-2006). He was
the mayor of Milwaukee from 1948-1960 and was the party’s presidential nominee in
1976. Zeidler collected these pamphlets and acquired some from other party members
as well.
