In 1961 the City Plan Commission, the Redevelopment Authority and the Housing
Authority merged into the Department of City Development (DCD). Its Director is
appointed by the Mayor for a two-year term, and serves as secretary of each of the
three component agencies. City Development acts as the planning, housing, economic
development, and redevelopment authority. The Department of City Development is
responsible for preserving city neighborhoods, managing public housing programs,
redeveloping neighborhoods, business districts and businesses, and furthering job
creation and retention.
The DCD also assists the following agencies: Common Council Economic Development
Committee; Community Housing and Preservation Corporation; Fourth of July
Commission; Historic Preservation Commission; Mayor’s Beautification Committee;
Milwaukee Arts Board; Milwaukee Economic Development Corporation; and Neighborhood
Improvement Development Corporation.
