Correspondence with fellow sociologists, representatives of sociological organizations, University of Wisconsin colleagues, and publishers document the major events and interests of his long career. From 1893 to 1900 the letters particularly indicate his views on bimetallism and capitalism, and many discuss the rift with Mrs. Leland Stanford which led to his departure from the faculty of Stanford University and subsequent academic freedom issues. Throughout the correspondence many letters reflect his interest in problems of population pressure, eugenics, and immigration restriction. During the 1930s his correspondence shows his interest in the New Deal, and his advocacy of federal health insurance and of the income tax in opposition to the sales tax. After Ross retired from active teaching in 1937, he lectured frequently on behalf of temperance education, worked for the American Committee for the Defense of Leon Trotsky, and aided the American Civil Liberties Union during the early years of World War II in support of conscientious objectors and of other efforts to offset wartime hysteria. Also present are field notes and class lectures, copies of articles and speeches, and drafts and revisions of Ross's best-known book, Principles of Sociology, travel diaries, photographs, scrapbooks of clipped newspaper and periodical materials, 1892-1909, and a box of unmounted newspaper articles, primarily of later dates, reveal the extent to which Ross became a national and sometimes a controversial figure in the development of sociological thought.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Edward M. Coffman, who served in the Army during the Korean War and has since become a nationally renowned scholar of American military history. This collection deals exclusively with the civilian portion of his life. Included are letters written to Coffman by Benjamin Morgan, a once and future student who was serving in Vietnam at the time the correspondence took place. Morgan's letters convey the thoughts and concerns of a college-educated American fighting a controversial war in a completely foreign country; his feelings of culture shock are expressed in several letters. He touches upon drug use and sexually transmitted diseases among U.S. soldiers and projects a growing disillusionment with the war. The memorabilia that Morgan sent to Coffman can also be found in the collection, including numerous “Nguyen Charlie” comic strips. There are also seven photographs that he sent to Coffman, including one of himself. The majority of the collection centers on Coffman's career as a military historian. The hard work and research that he put into getting General Lucian Truscott's writings about the American cavalry published are reflected in this collection. Marked-up proofs of several military histories, a student paper about the Wisconsin Civil War soldiers buried in the Union Rest section of Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, as well as fliers and programs for Coffman's speaking engagements all reflect his prominence in the field. The collection also contains war-related items that Coffman collected through the years, such as the World War I era presentation “Our Boys in France” (manuscript and slides), intended to create public support for the war effort, and glass slides of World War I maps.

Baillie, Edward P. Title: Edward P. Baillie Papers and Photographs,
Quantity: 0.8 linear ft. (2 archives boxes and 4 oversized folders) of papers and 0.4 linear ft. (1 archives box) of photographs.
Call Number: WVM Mss 941
Abstract: The papers and photographs of Edward P. Baillie, an officer in the Coastal Artillery who later served at a stateside prisoner of war camp during World War II. His time at the prisoner of war camp in Ruston, Louisiana is documented by a directory of the camp, roster of the prisoners, and various passes, as well as a sketch and several watercolor paintings by the prisoners. The camp held German and Ukrainian prisoners, largely officers. A large amount of study materials from his time at a radar school at the Presidio show the information being presented to the students. The collection also contains numerous souvenirs collected by Baillie and his wife, Sarah, in the several states and bases at which he served during the war. Sarah stayed with Baillie as he was transferred around the country and often found war work at nearby bases. Largely ephemeral in nature, these souvenirs document the stateside soldier as tourist. Many of the souvenirs are postcards, but they also include menus, flyers, and advertisements for local establishments from places like a bullfight in Juarez, Mexico, the Carlsbad Caverns, Muir Woods, Lake Tahoe, New Orleans, and San Quentin prison. A newspaper from San Francisco welcomed war workers to the city, introducing restaurants and other places of interest in the city. Photographs correspond to the souvenirs in that they document the travels and recreational activities of Edward and Sarah rather than his military service. The photographs of landlords show that Sarah lived off base and needed to find accommodations. Edward is in uniform in most of the photographs and there are shots of other uniformed men at the Army base in San Rafael, California.

Most thoroughly covered are the affairs of the Wisconsin Realty Company of Milwaukee, the Winnebago Realty Company of Neenah and Milwaukee, and the Flambeau Paper Company of Park Falls. All the firms apparently were centrally administered by the Sherry family. Most of the collection dates from 1898 to 1941 when Edward P. Sherry directed the family's interests; the largest group of records documents Edward's running of the Wisconsin Realty Company, and its involvement in the building of the Flambeau Reservoir (now called the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage), and the development of dams and electric power along the Wolf River in Langlade County. Records prior to 1898 consist largely of land deeds, grants, and patents, with fragmentary correspondence and financial records. For the post-1940 period various types of records exist, but all are fragmentary.

DeNomie, Edward S. Title: Edward S. DeNomie Papers and Photographs,
Quantity: 0.2 linear ft. (1 archives box) of papers, 0.6 linear ft. (1 archives box, one flat box, and 61 negative flaps) of photographs.
Call Number: WVM Mss 1227
Abstract: Manuscripts and photographs relating to the service of Edward DeNomie, a Bad River Ojibwa who served with Company K, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Mexican Border War and with the 128th Infantry Regiment of the 32nd Division during World War I. Originally from Keweenaw Bay, Michigan, DeNomie attended the Tomah Indian Boarding School in Tomah and was later recruited by the Wisconsin National Guard. The collection includes manuscripts and photographs pertaining to his high school years as well as his service with the National Guard. The manuscripts include service records, letters, photocopies of Indian registers and family history documents, a copy of the Tomah High School yearbook, souvenir brochures, photocopies of a scrapbook, and a personal diary from World War I. The diary contains brief daily entries describing troop movements, supply distributions, disease on the front line, undergoing artillery bombardments, collecting war souvenirs from dead German soldiers, and witnessing his friend “Chub” being killed by shrapnel. It also includes a prayer entitled “A Soldier's Prayer,” which is a humorous take on the Lord's Prayer, and a poem entitled “The Slacker” which demeans those who did not serve during the war. DeNomie wrote a timeline of events pertaining to the 32nd division in his diary, along with a description and sketch of the insignia of all the divisions that comprised the American Expeditionary Force. The letters include one sent by his father and two from Naida while he was training with the National Guard in 1917. They discuss happenings within the family and friends, with Naida kidding him about being a “sissy.” There is also one letter (1920) from his sister, Odelia, who joined a convent, wishing his family a Happy Easter. There is also a souvenir program from a reception held for the return of Company B, 121st Machine Gun Battalion. It lists the members of the battalion, including DeNomie, who is listed as a private. Also of interest is a comical “will” of Kaiser Wilhelm that names who he is leaving his things to after the war. The photographs include oversized images of his high school sports teams, family images, training at Fort Douglas, and postcards and photographs from his combat service. The images taken during training show DeNomie and Native American soldiers relaxing and humorously posing. One photograph shows two Native American soldiers pretending to bayonet a fellow soldier, while another shows a soldier aiming a handgun at another soldier who is smiling as he holds his hands up in surrender. There are also images of DeNomie posing with members of his kitchen patrol, and interacting with fellow soldiers. Particularly interesting are several images of soldiers taken during training and during the Mexican Border War that he identifies as being his “buddies.” World War I postcards and photographs include images of the destruction, German soldiers and submarines, and various famous European sites. DeNomie included captions on some images describing battle locations, witnessing destruction, and identifying the ship that took him to Europe.

The largest portion of the collection relates to Lauer's work with three different veterans' organziations: the 32nd Division Veterans Association, the National Tuscania Survivor's Association, and the Red Arrow Club of Milwaukee. These materials document his role as historian and give an idea of the activities of the organizations. The 32nd Division Veterans Association played a large role in the publication of Harold Blakeley's 32nd Infantry Division in World War II, the Tuscania group corresponded with the German U-boat captain who sank their ship, and the Red Arrow Club successfully lobbied to have State Highway 32 dedicated as the Red Arrow 32nd Division Memorial Highway. The collection also contains materials relating to Lauer's work in the war industries during World War II, particularly papers and photographs from the Milwaukee Ordnance Plant. Lauer's role as a historian in veterans' organizations led other veterans to entrust him with their primary documents; this collection has military intelligence documents from both World Wars, including maps, reports, and photographs. Lauer's numerous writings, autobiographical and unit histories, are included along with some unpublished historical writings of others on the World Wars.
