Abstract: Papers of Alexander Trachtenberg, an educator and publisher active in the socialist, labor, and communist movements. Present are incoming correspondence, mainly from the l950's and l960's (letters from L. B. Boudin, Norman Thomas, and Herbert Aptheker are included); printed and manuscript versions of his writings and speeches; biographical material and miscellany; and subject files on various organizations and events with which he was involved. Most notable among the latter are the files on International Publishers, his radical publishing firm; the Jefferson School of Social Science, which he helped to organize; and his trial under provisions of the Smith Act.

Abstract: Papers of a Kenosha, Wisconsin native and actor, best-known for his role in the NBC series Hill Street Blues and in the television film Adam. The collection includes personal correspondence, invitations and requests from charitable organizations, fan mail, and letters about Travanti's work with alcoholism recovery groups. Other personal papers include awards, and magazine and newspaper articles about Travanti and other members of the Hill Street Blues cast. There are also scripts and production files illustrating Travanti's acting career, among them materials from Hill Street Blues; the television movies and specials Adam: His Song Continues, Case of Libel, Here's Richard, (a special about fitness expert Richard Simmons), and Murrow, an HBO film about Edward R. Murrow; Night of 100 Stars, a 1985 benefit for the Actors' Fund of America; and the play Twigs.

Abstract: Papers of Charles G. Treat, a U.S. Army general from Monroe, Wisconsin, who served in both the Spanish-American War and World War I. Included are fragmentary correspondence, biographical material and memorabilia, three diaries (including two concerning his service as head of the American forces in Italy during World War I), a subject file concerning his love of horses, and miscellany. Among the prominent correspondents are letters from Newton D. Baker, O. O. Howard, Robert Lansing, Thomas Nelson Page, John J. Pershing, Theodore Roosevelt, William T. Sherman, and Leonard Wood.

Abstract: Administrative, program, and curricular records of Trees for Tomorrow, Inc. of Eagle River, Wis., a non-profit conservation and environmental education organization, acknowledged as the oldest conservation education center in the Midwest. Established through member subscriptions from seventeen Wisconsin paper and utility industries, Trees for Tomorrow worked in cooperation with state and county agencies in reforesting the cutover region of northern Wisconsin. The focus of the organization has changed over time but major components have included tree planting and distribution, forest management services, and conservation education. The collection contains annual, staff monthly, and program reports; program statistical data; committee and governing body minutes and supporting materials; financial records; general correspondence and subject files; correspondence with member paper mills and utility companies; and public relations materials. Also included are administrative records concerning forest management services and camp educational workshops, forest management plans and maps developed for private landowners, curricular and program records relating to the educational workshops and classes offered at the Trees camp, and personal papers of executive director, M. N. “Mully” Taylor. A small photograph series contains views of workshops and tours, camp facilities, forest management activities, early tree planting machines, and miscellaneous images.

Abstract: Records of Trowbridge, Planert & Schaefer, a Green Bay, Wisconsin, firm which practiced civil law on behalf of individuals, small businesses, and a few large corporate clients. Consisting of correspondence, 1876-1905, financial records, 1891-1951, attorneys' personal papers, and extensive case files, the records largely document operation of the legal system outside formal court proceedings. Among the most informative materials are those discussing debtors' financial conditions and various strategies in debt collection cases and those concerning negotiation of settlements between insurance firms and automobile accident victims. The records illuminate several other areas as well: the nature and operation of the financial credit structure, the impact of the automobile on the practice of law, the professionalization of the practice of law at the end of the 19th century, the role of a general law firm operating in a regional urban center, and the business and financial operations of a law firm. Finally, the records contain some information on the non-business, public interests and activities of a group of successful professional men. Firm members whose personal papers are included in the collection are George Bills, H.O. Fairchild, George G. Greene, James McGillan, Barton L. Parker, F.N. Trowbridge, and Rodney C. Welch. The firm's corporate clients included Holt Lumber Company, Menominee Bay Shore Lumber Company, Green Bay and Western Railway Company, Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company, and the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation.

Abstract: Papers of Dalton Trumbo, an author and writer of motion picture scripts who, as one of the Hollywood Ten, was imprisoned following 1947 hearings before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The collection offers remarkably complete documentation of his work and the blacklisting to which he was subjected until 1960. It includes correspondence, writings, financial records, recordings, and subject files on HUAC and the Hollywood Ten. Correspondence, 1925-1962, includes letters to his wife and family concerning his experiences as a correspondent during World War II, his prison experiences in 1950 and 1951, as well as many letters to and from agents, playwrights, producers, and other members of the Ten. Numerous letters relate to the Congressional hearings, his work as a black market writer under assumed names during the 1950s, and his attitudes toward blacklisting. Among his correspondents are Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, E.Y. Harburg, John Huston, Gordon Kahn, Garson Kanin, Murray Kempton, Ring Lardner Jr., John Howard Lawson, Carey McWilliams, Albert Maltz, David Merrick, Dore Schary, Herman Shumlin, and Sam Zimbalist. Abstract: The Emil Truog papers document the activities of Professor Emil Truog at the Soil Science Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Truog was on the faculty at Wisconsin from 1921 to 1954 and made lasting contributions to the fields of soil science, agronomy, and chemistry. His papers include personal, administrative and scientific correspondence, manuscripts, photographs and scrapbooks.

Abstract: Records of the Milwaukee County Orphans Board, 1899-1945. Established by a special act of the Wisconsin Legislature in 1871, the Orphans Board supported orphan asylums with distributions from the proceeds of estates without heirs. A series of Wisconsin Supreme Court cases ended this practice in the 1930s. The Board distributed funds to various orphanages including St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum, St. Aemillian's Orphan Asylum, St. Rose's Orphan Asylum, Lutheran Children's Home, Milwaukee Orphan Asylum, Milwaukee Jewish Orphan Home, St. Vincent's Infant Orphan Asylum, St. Joseph's Home, and St. Joseph's Home of St. Raphael.
