Abstract: Records, mainly 1984-1987, of Nicaragua Exchange, an organization that coordinated brigades of American volunteer harvest workers in Nicaragua and that worked to promote friendship between Nicaragua and the United States. Included are correspondence with potential and former brigade volunteers, Nicaragua Network, and other organizations concerned with the Nicaraguan policy issue; extensive volunteer applications and evaluations; clippings; administrative records; and promotional materials (including film and sound recordings) produced by Nicaragua Exchange and other organizations. The videotapes include a speech by Daniel Ortega to volunteer workers.

Abstract: Founded as the National Network in Solidarity with the Nicaraguan People in 1979, Nicaragua Network (NN) is an umbrella organization made up of local and national committees, task forces, and groups throughout the United States. Its purpose is to increase understanding between the peoples of the United States and Nicaragua by providing financial and material aid for Nicaragua; educational speaking tours throughout the U.S.; and special work brigades. In addition to documenting these programs, the collection provides information about activist groups in the U.S. at both the grassroots and national level, and about the political and economic conditions of the average Nicaraguan during the 1980s. Included is correspondence; clippings, both for reference and about Nicaragua Network; meeting minutes, mainly of the Coordinating Committee (CC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC); brigade applications and evaluations; administrative office files; publicity material, both for Nicaragua Network and member/related organizations; procedural manuals and memoranda, especially on publicity and fundraising; reports; typed and handwritten reports/notes on regular telephone calls between the U.S. and Managua offices; and press releases.

Abstract: Papers of Floy and Lulu Nichols, sisters who were born and raised in Berlin, Wisconsin, and later moved to Chicago where Floy worked at the University of Chicago transcribing theses and other publications. The papers consist of correspondence between the sisters and with other family and friends, scrapbooks, financial records, recipes, and school notebooks. Also included are photographs depicting family members, family events, and scenes of Wisconsin.

Abstract: Papers compiled by Nichols and Constans concerning gay rights and gay activism in Madison, Wisconsin and nationally. Included are partial records of the Madison Committee for Gay Rights, for which Nichols served as coordinator, such as correspondence, statements and platform proposals; a questionnaire, responses, and list of endorsed candidates for a local 1978 election; and a few financial records of the associated Gay Activists Alliance. Both Nichols and Constans were on the staff of MCGR's newsletter, “The Gay Endeavor,” which published only one issue. There are partial records present from both the national and local committees which promoted the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, October 14, 1979. Other local gay rights organizations are also represented by fragmentary files of newsletters, leaflets, and press releases; these include Gay Renaissance of Madison and Lesbian Communication Collective (publisher of “We Got It” newsletter). Newsclippings are primarily from Madison newspapers, and concern local human and gay rights activities, as well as threats to gay rights and homosexuals.

Abstract: Papers of a playwright, screenwriter, and editor, consisting chiefly of synopses, treatments, scenarios, and scripts for Nicholson's work in theater, motion pictures, and radio. Several of the theater scripts were co-authored with his friend S. N. Behrman. Also of interest is a film treatment heavily annotated by Darryl F. Zanuck and scripts for the radio programs Cavalcade of America (CBS), which Nicholson produced, and Theatre Guild of the Air (ABC), later on the United States Steel Hour on NBC), for which he was an adapter. Also present are general correspondence, financial records, legal files, playbills, reviews, clippings, and microfilmed scrapbooks which relate in particular to his work in the theater. Prominent correspondents include Bernard Baruch, Behrman, David Belasco, Thomas E. Dewey, Walter Huston, Carl Laemmle, H. L. Mencken, George Jean Nathan, Billy Rose, Dore Schary, Robert E. Sherwood, Stuart Walker, and Darryl F. Zanuck.

Abstract: Papers of an assemblyman from Clark County (1958-1966; 1968-1970) who served in a leadership capacity both on the floor of the Legislature and within the Democratic Party. Alphabetical subject files contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, clippings, speeches, press releases, committee records, and printed matter. Best are the files on various committee memberships including the Building Commission, Interstate Cooperation Committee, Judiciary Committee, Special Committee on Town Government Incorporation, Legislative Campaign Committee of the Democratic Party, and the 1960 Humphrey delegation to the national convention. For 1965-1966 there is a chronological file of constituent correspondence regarding proposed or pending legislation.

Abstract: Prints, ephemera, and an 1860 campaign banner relating to the life of Abraham Lincoln, dating 1860 to 1937. Images primarily consist of engravings and lithographs dating to Lincoln's presidency depicting Lincoln as a family man, on his death bed, and as a martyr. The collection also contains images of Lincoln's childhood home in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, as well as photographs and ephemera relating to the Lincoln memorials in Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Springfield, Illinois.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1936-1955, of Robert G. Nixon, a journalist and writer who worked for the International News Service (INS) from 1930 to 1956 and thereafter worked in the public relations field. Included are a copy of an oral history interview conducted for the Truman Library, a brief personal memoir about his experiences as a war correspondent during the Battle of Britain, expense statements, memorabilia, fragmentary correspondence, public relations products, biographical photographs, and writings. The collection primarily consists of printed and draft news stories and notes chiefly pertaining to his coverage of World War II military events in Europe and North Africa, 1939-1943, the Casablanca and Potsdam conferences, and the presidencies of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. A few items relate to Merrill Mueller and other INS journalists. Nixon's free-lance writing is represented by unpublished books ghost written for Floyd Dominy, commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation; Congressman Michael Kirwan; and General Harry Vaughan; and by a few fiction and non-fiction items. Public relations work includes a large file of press releases, brochures, and other printed items prepared for the National Council for Industrial Peace and a program prepared for the government of Iran.
