Abstract: Papers of Howard Le Sieur, a member of the Advertising and Publicity Department who was promoted to director of the department in 1948 to replace Paul Lazarus Jr. Although the file mainly documents Le Sieur's work after 1948, some files relate to Lazarus' tenure. Part of the series consists of information on films that Le Sieur advertised, primarily information on official billing for actors and actresses, some reviews, and notes. The second part consists largely of files on advertising agencies such as Donahue and Coe and Buchanan and Company. Present are extensive files on several films including The Outlaw and Henry V, and a selection of comments submitted by previewers of The Underworld Story (working title: The Whipped).

Abstract: Papers of Eugene Leach, a Racine, Wisconsin, historian and curator of the Racine County Museum, including an unpublished manuscript, “The Story of Racine County--History.” The collection also contains biographical files on important Racine residents, miscellaneous material relating to county history, and five scrapbooks of clippings describing the involvement of Racine residents in the Spanish-American War and World War I. There are also records of the Racine Senate, 1884-1851, and the Racine Relief Association, 1883-1898. The photographs are images of people associated with Racine County, Wisconsin, during the late 19th century, collected by Leach for use in illustrating his writings.

Abstract: Records of a federation of religious, labor, and ethnic organizations interested in promoting passage of civil rights legislation and advancing the cause of equality. Founded in 1953, the LCCR was formerly known as Civil Rights Mobilization, and was headed for many years by Roy Wilkins. The collection contains printed memoranda regarding LCCR activities, legislation and lobbying efforts; as well as a folder of general printed correspondence, memos, and LCCR statements, and LCCR Enforcement Reports from 1976.

Abstract: Administrative and working files of a grassroots, activist organization founded in 1973 to fight a proposed nuclear power plant in Rudolph, Wis. Active membership was primarily composed of women homemakers, several of whom, especially Gertrude Dixon and Naomi Jacobson, became extremely knowledgeable about nuclear issues in Wisconsin. Included are organization newsletters, press releases, correspondence, reference materials, newspaper clippings, testimony, speeches, flyers, and an article and paper written about the group by Virginia Kemp Fish, a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point sociology professor. Research and action files pertain to a variety of nuclear issues confronting Wisconsin including actions taken to fight proposed nuclear power plants in the Wisconsin communities of Genoa, Koshkonong, Point Beach, Rudolph, and Tyrone. Two such actions involved a milk radiation contamination study at Point Beach and involvement of the cranberry growers at Rudolph. Materials collected by LAND from other organizations contain a lot of information about other groups working in Wisconsin at the time. Included are materials from Safe Haven, Ltd. (Sheboygan, Wis.), Lake Superior Region Radioactive Waste Project, Stop Project ELF, Wisconsin Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign (Madison, Wis.), and Women of All Red Nations (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Photographs depict various protest efforts including Burma Shave-type road signs near Rudolph, and protest rallies at Madison and possibly at Stevens Point.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1927-1953, of the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, an organization established in 1898 to benefit Wisconsin cities and villages. Documentation is best for the period after 1928 when Frederick MacMillen joined the organization as executive secretary and editor. Included are materials documenting the League's role in advising local communities and in drafting state legislation. Also included is a panoramic photograph of participants in the 16th annual convention of the League, 1914.

Abstract: Records of the local League of Women Voters (LWV) that was organized as the Dane County League of Women Voters in 1920. In 1927 it became the League of Women Voters of Madison. In 1971 the Madison LWV merged with the League of Women Voters of Middleton (founded in 1958) to become the present organization. Records of all three groups are included, although the Madison League is the most extensively documented. Included are by-laws, annual reports, minutes of the Board of Directors and general membership meetings, financial reports, correspondence of officers, committee and local unit reports, membership materials, publications, and photographs.

Abstract: Records of a Milwaukee area civic group primarily for women, involved in studying local community and political issues, influencing political decision making, and encouraging voter participation. Included are general records such as minutes and reports of annual, executive board, and board of directors meetings, bulletins, by-laws, scattered committee records, some general correspondence, fiftieth anniversary records, a few financial records, membership records, some national and state LWV records, and scrapbooks. Local study issues illustrate societal and political concerns of the Milwaukee League, but files are incomplete. With the exception of a file on open housing dating from 1933, most local study materials date from the 1960s and 1970s, and cover such topics as the administration of justice, air pollution, city government, education, energy, environment, Equal Rights Amendment, foreign trade, housing, human rights, Lake Michigan water quality, land use, reapportionment, sewerage, solid waste, transportation, voter registration and rights, and water resources. The collection includes partial records of the Inter-League Council, formed in 1959 to coordinate local League activities, consisting of agreements and amendments, minutes and reports of annual meetings, bulletins, by-laws, convention reports, financial records, and minutes of meetings. There are also small files of annual reports, bulletins, minutes, correspondence, financial records, membership records, scrapbooks, and a few local study files from the League of Women Voters of Greendale and the League of Women Voters of West Allis.

Included are general records such as minutes, bulletins, by-laws, correspondence, a history, membership lists, a few financial records, reports to the national league, scrapbooks of newsclippings, files on local study issues, and a manuscript and reference materials for Know Your Community, Oshkosh, Wisconsin: A Guide to Local Government and Services, published by the Oshkosh League in 1976. Local study issues illustrate societal and political concerns of the Oshkosh League, and include fragmentary correspondence, notes, near-print materials, clippings, and other papers on a few topics. Of greatest importance are the files from the League's study of the City Council-City Manager form of government under consideration by the City of Oshkosh during the 1960s.

The vast majority of these papers relate to Lee’s political career in the Assembly and Senate (1976-1989), his tenure as the Executive Director of the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations (1990-1997), and his tenure as an Assistant Professor of Government Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1997- ). These papers contain campaign literature Lee drafted, correspondence on legislation with which he was involved, newspaper clippings pertaining to legal and cultural issues central to Milwaukee and Judaism, and scholarly articles published by Lee on public administration policy.

Included is footage showing President Calvin Coolidge's arrival in Superior and his visit to Hibbing, Minnesota, during his 1928 vacation; activities at the Superior-Duluth harbor including ore boats arriving, tugboats, and the loading of a grain ship; winter and summer leisure activities; and street scenes and neighborhood activities in the Connor's Point neighborhood of Superior where Leigh lived.

Abstract: Professional and personal correspondence, diaries, speeches, articles, book drafts, and other writings, biographical materials, clippings, and trade union files of William M. Leiserson, the labor economist, teacher, and arbitrator, who served on a number of state and national unemployment and labor relations boards. He also taught at Antioch College, 1926-1933, and did research in labor relations for the Twentieth Century Fund in the 1930s and 1940s. Particularly well documented is Leiserson's work as arbitrator for the clothing industry in the 1920s and his guidance in enactment of Ohio's unemployment law in the 1930s. While heading the National Mediation Board and serving as a member of the National Labor Relations Board, Leiserson provided expert opinion to Presidents Roosevelt and Truman and members of Congress. In the trade union files are materials gathered from numerous unions in the 1940s for Leiserson's study of trade union government.

The collection consists of correspondence to and from legislative colleagues, constituents, Milwaukee businessmen, lobbyists, and Republican Party leaders and an alphabetical subject file containing information about specific legislation, committee assignments, and investigations conducted by the senator. Among the well covered topics are budgets and taxes, the Governor's Commission on Human Rights and open housing, the Governor's Scholarship and Loan Committee, the Kellett governmental reorganization bill, alleged Communist influence of the Daily Cardinal, and pornography. Lescohier, a former industrial consultant and professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin primarily consisting of consultant reports and related materials, other writings, and bibliographies. For work done as a consultant for Allis-Chalmers there are reports on profit sharing and the closed shop, a personnel management course textbook, minutes of negotiations (1949), copies of form letters to employees (1946-1947) and a subject index of grievances. Also of interest are a photo scrapbook and interview notes for a study of the influence of the IWW during the harvest of 1921.

Abstract: Papers of J. Earl Leverich, a former Wisconsin legislator elected as both a Progressive and as a Republican (1935-1939 and 1943-1967) who was best known for his opposition to the manufacture and sale of oleomargarine in Wisconsin. Also included are papers of his father, James W. Leverich, a prominent fruit farmer and leading figure in the cooperative movement in western Wisconsin. The legislative papers, 1935-1939 and 1943-1967, consist of constituent correspondence and subject files, and they document dairy and agricultural issues, highway construction, aviation, Camp McCoy, education, taxation, and conservation. Correspondence, campaign literature, and financial reports document all of his electoral campaigns. Additional papers document his career as chairman of the Town of Angelo, his interest in aviation, management of the family farm, leadership in the 1931 demonstration that resulted in the passage of strong anti-oleomargarine legislation, membership in Governor Schmedeman's 1933 Dairy Committee, and management of the Sparta Cooperative Creamery. The elder Leverich's papers include some personal correspondence and additional papers concerning the Town of Angelo and the management of the family farm. There are also financial records of the Sparta Fruit Growers Association and the Sparta Produce Exchange. The photographs primarily document Leverich's inspection of the Petenwell Dam as part of a legislative committee in 1949.

Abstract: Papers of Herman Levin, a leading Broadway producer. Especially rich in its coverage of the financial aspects of theatrical production, the collection also includes correspondence, contracts and Actors' Equity agreements, lyrics and orchestrations, microfilmed scrapbooks, a few scripts, and miscellaneous other production records. Much of the collection relates to Levin's much-acclaimed success My Fair Lady (1956), with the remainder consisting of material on other major productions including Call Me Mister (1946), produced with Melvyn Douglas; No Exit (1946); Gentlemen Prefer Blonds (1946), which he produced in collaboration with Oliver Smith; The Girl Who Came to Supper (1963); the award-winning The Great White Hope (1968); and a controversial Lovely Ladies, Kind Gentlemen (1970).

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1925-1955, of Rubin Levin, a labor journalist who was associated with the Milwaukee Leader and other Wisconsin newspapers during the 1930's and who was editor of Labor from 1953 to 1981. Included are biographical materials; personal correspondence exchanged with friends and family; a few papers of his wife Bertha Greenberg Levin, who worked as a free-lance publicist during the 1930's; and subject files concerning Labor, the Labor Press Association, and Milwaukee politics and government. The personal correspondence includes many letters to and from his wife written in 1938, the year of his first work in Washington, D.C., and her first pregnancy and a few letters concerning a brother associated with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin. Levin's writings include unpublished articles and stories; a literary journal kept during the 1920's when he traveled widely through the United States, Canada, and Europe; published free-lance articles; and a collection of his newspaper work which is available only on microfilm.

Abstract: This collection contains biographical materials about Precisionist painter and mosaicist, Edmund Lewandowski. Lewandowski was an artist, educator, president of the Layton School of Art (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), and later chair of the Art Department at Winthrop College (now Winthrop University) in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The collection consists of a scrapbook that documents all of these roles, comprised largely of photocopied newspaper clippings. Also included in the collection are correspondence, exhibition catalogs, awards and photographs of his artwork. Some newspaper clippings are in Polish. The collection contains very little original art and few original personal papers.

Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), 1920-1960, including correspondence, speeches, reports, union financial and travel notebooks, genealogical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, film, tape recordings, and disc recordings containing many of Lewis' more important speeches. The union financial and travel notebooks provide important information about the UMWA from 1911 to 1926. The important subjects of correspondence include the following persons: Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Philip Murray, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Wendell L. Abstract: Papers and photographs of Reuben B. Lewis, a bugler and military policeman with the 32nd Division during World War I, a County Veterans Service Officer for Portage County, and an active participant in many veterans organizations, especially Company “C” from the 4th Wisconsin Infantry. A large portion of the papers relate to Lewis's involvement in the Company “C” organization, which held annual reunions through the 1980's. Membership files and rosters, reunion announcements and reports, and newspaper clippings document the activities of the group and the camaraderie that the men shared. Scattered personal papers give some details about his World War I service, and ephemeral items show his involvement in numerous other veterans organizations. Home appraisals document his work in helping veterans buy their own homes. Photographs include group shots from Company “C” reunions and a photograph album from Lewis's World War I service. The video shows the 1986 Company “C” reunion where the last five surviving members share a seventy-year old bottle of cognac.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1941-2009, of Robert G. Lewis, a nationally prominent agricultural economist, consultant, government official, and freelance writer, and his wife, Martha Wells Lewis. The papers contain: personal papers including his service during World War II and his management of a Wisconsin farm; professional papers documenting his appointments to various positions in the public and private sector dealing with agricultural issues; and his freelance writings on agriculture. Among the documented interests in agriculture that cut across his many professional associations are agricultural cooperatives, milk and dairy products, wheat and grains, international trade, rural development, and food policies both in the United States and abroad. The photographs consist of formal and informal portraits and images used for article illustration.
