DeNomie, Edward S. Title: Edward S. DeNomie Papers and Photographs,
Quantity: 0.2 linear ft. (1 archives box) of papers, 0.6 linear ft. (1 archives box, one flat box, and 61 negative flaps) of photographs.
Call Number: WVM Mss 1227
Abstract: Manuscripts and photographs relating to the service of Edward DeNomie, a Bad River Ojibwa who served with Company K, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Mexican Border War and with the 128th Infantry Regiment of the 32nd Division during World War I. Originally from Keweenaw Bay, Michigan, DeNomie attended the Tomah Indian Boarding School in Tomah and was later recruited by the Wisconsin National Guard. The collection includes manuscripts and photographs pertaining to his high school years as well as his service with the National Guard. The manuscripts include service records, letters, photocopies of Indian registers and family history documents, a copy of the Tomah High School yearbook, souvenir brochures, photocopies of a scrapbook, and a personal diary from World War I. The diary contains brief daily entries describing troop movements, supply distributions, disease on the front line, undergoing artillery bombardments, collecting war souvenirs from dead German soldiers, and witnessing his friend “Chub” being killed by shrapnel. It also includes a prayer entitled “A Soldier's Prayer,” which is a humorous take on the Lord's Prayer, and a poem entitled “The Slacker” which demeans those who did not serve during the war. DeNomie wrote a timeline of events pertaining to the 32nd division in his diary, along with a description and sketch of the insignia of all the divisions that comprised the American Expeditionary Force. The letters include one sent by his father and two from Naida while he was training with the National Guard in 1917. They discuss happenings within the family and friends, with Naida kidding him about being a “sissy.” There is also one letter (1920) from his sister, Odelia, who joined a convent, wishing his family a Happy Easter. There is also a souvenir program from a reception held for the return of Company B, 121st Machine Gun Battalion. It lists the members of the battalion, including DeNomie, who is listed as a private. Also of interest is a comical “will” of Kaiser Wilhelm that names who he is leaving his things to after the war. The photographs include oversized images of his high school sports teams, family images, training at Fort Douglas, and postcards and photographs from his combat service. The images taken during training show DeNomie and Native American soldiers relaxing and humorously posing. One photograph shows two Native American soldiers pretending to bayonet a fellow soldier, while another shows a soldier aiming a handgun at another soldier who is smiling as he holds his hands up in surrender. There are also images of DeNomie posing with members of his kitchen patrol, and interacting with fellow soldiers. Particularly interesting are several images of soldiers taken during training and during the Mexican Border War that he identifies as being his “buddies.” World War I postcards and photographs include images of the destruction, German soldiers and submarines, and various famous European sites. DeNomie included captions on some images describing battle locations, witnessing destruction, and identifying the ship that took him to Europe.

Deutcher Verein (La Crosse, Wis.). Title: Deutscher Verein Records
Physical Description: 0.4 cubic feet
Call Number: MSS A
Abstract: The Deutscher Verein was a German cultural, social, and musical organization formed officially in 1874 through the consolidation of two much older local German groups from the mid-1850s; namely, the Turn Verein or Turners and Liederkranz or Singing Society. In 1875 the German Independent School Society also joined the Deutscher Verein. The name was changed to the Germania Society in November 1877 but still called itself the Deutscher Verein in official documents. In 1918 the group’s name again changed to the Pioneer Club as a result of anti-German sentiment during World War I. The club was dissolved in 1937 due to a decline in membership. Records of the Deutscher Verein von La Crosse (Wis.), consist of historical background, legal and financial records, 1876-1937, including articles of incorporation (1892 amendments), warranty and quit-claim deeds, bond issues, trustee appointments, and dissolution documents. Also available are records from two of the predecessor groups, the Liederkranz (records date from 1859-1881) and Turn Verein (records date from 1865-1874), and one document of the German Independent School Society stating a merger with the Deutscher Verein in 1875. Some of the early records are written in the German language.

Dewey, Nelson, 1813-1889 Title: Nelson Dewey Papers, 1818-1907
Quantity: 2.6 c.f. (11 archives boxes)
Call Number: Wis Mss DK
Abstract: Papers, mainly 1836-1889, of Wisconsin's first governor, Nelson Dewey, a resident of Lancaster and Cassville. The papers primarily document real estate investments, both his own and that of others whose interests Dewey represented. The records consist of correspondence, deeds, mortgages, and legal agreements, abstracts, lists, and financial record books. Client files contain records of this type for individuals such as Gerrit V. Denniston of Albany, New York, the initial developer of Cassville, and Joel Allen Barber, Dewey's law partner and a Wisconsin congressman. Despite their extent, the files of Dewey and his partners, Denniston and Barber, are limited for the early years. A large file concerns Congressman Ben C. Eastman of Platteville, whose complicated estate was settled by Dewey. This file includes letters that might properly be considered Eastman's papers, as well as Dewey's legal correspondence with Eastman's widow Charlotte and others. Other Wisconsin individuals who appear in the business files include William A. Barstow, Ira Brunson, Nathaniel Dean, George Delaplaine, and Cyrus Woodman. Congressman Henry Hubbard of Charlestown, New Hampshire, is one of the many Eastern speculators whom Dewey represented. The only personal material in the collection consists of letters from Dewey's brother James in New York City; an inventory of Stonefield, Dewey's home at Cassville that burned in 1873; and receipts and checks documenting personal expenses, 1839-1874. Diaries, which are scattered from 1854 to 1889, provide limited information, as they contain only brief notations about travel and health. However, they do include property memoranda and detailed annual expense lists which supplement the previously mentioned personal information. There are no political papers except for handwritten copies of his annual messages to the Legislature.

The collection consists largely of the military papers that DeWitt obtained throughout his military career including orders, forms, and reports. These papers do give some insight into service with the Army Reserves. Personal memoirs go into greater detail about his service from enlistment through retirement. DeWitt's interest in veterans organizations and general World War II history are evidenced by reunion materials and other veterans' reminiscences. The photographs include two large and well-captioned scrapbooks that document DeWitt's World War II service, along with some shots from post-war mountain warfare training at Camp Carson.
