Abstract:
Collection of still images pertaining to Wisconsin veterans, mainly members of various veteran organizations, from the Civil War through World War II. The vast majority of images are from the Civil War and include images of GAR members and Women's Relief Corps members. Portrait types include chalk, charcoal, pen-and-ink drawings, etchings and photographs. Most of the images are artistic portraits of Civil War veterans, with a few featuring family members and groups of veterans. There are photographs of members of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Lucius Fairchild Post (Madison, WI), and its auxiliary Women's Relief Corps Post. Images of note include two portraits of Lucius Fairchild, who served in the 1st and 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiments during the Civil War and served three times as governor of Wisconsin; and a portrait of Arthur McArthur, who served as adjutant in the 24th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, and served in the Spanish-American War, eventually being promoted to brigadier general. Images from the Spanish-American war feature a group of officers, individual portraits of two of those officers, and a few images of soldiers from Wisconsin. World War I and World War II are only represented in a few images of soldiers and group photograph of soldiers at a camp in Georgia.
