Abstract:
Manuscript and photographic materials pertaining to the service of Robert Alexander Bonin, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, resident who served in the Navy during World War II and was commander of the submarine USS Gudgeon when it disappeared in the spring of 1944. Robert Bonin's manuscripts are broken into four sub-series: biographical information, education, military service and personal memorabilia. Biographical materials include a transcript of an oral history done by several of Bonin's siblings after his death. School materials are from his civilian and military education. Civilian materials include certificates and diplomas, a piece of engineering work, and photographs, and his military school papers include graduation invitations and photographs from graduation and Annapolis. Military service includes correspondence from Bonin to another submarine commander, his final V-Mail to his wife, Regis, and the telegram informing her Bonin had gone missing. Also included in correspondence are letters informing her of the progression from missing to presumed dead, then being declared dead and condolence letters from friends and family. Included in his awards and honors are several letters and certificates for Bonin's service in the Navy. Also included in this grouping are materials from when Bonin's wife, Regis, and his two children, Jean and Robert went to the commissioning of the new Gudgeon and were awarded a Samurai sword for his service. Personal memorabilia include papers from his wedding to his wife, Regis, as well as photographs from that day. Most of the material in the collection is in the research materials from Bonin's family. Their research and activities include meetings and correspondence with submarine veterans around the country. The family series includes newsclippings about memorials and veterans meetings, letters and photographs from other veterans and research done on submarines and submarine warfare.
