Amen, 1992

The American Tapestry, 2004

Scope and Content Note: In 2004, Wendy Clarke attended two massive citizenship ceremonies in California. One at the Los Angeles Convention Center and another at the Pomona Fairplex. Clarke set up a booth with an American flag outside of each location, inviting people to take a photo to mark the occasion. She captured one photo of each person and recorded their name, address, and email. She then sent each participant the photo and asked if they would like to share their immigration story. A few hundred people participated at both locations. Clarke's initial plan was to receive stories and release forms in the mail, but she later sent a letter outlining a revised plan: "I am now visualizing a fuller project, which would include your photo, written story and video oral history." These tapes include footage of the citizenship ceremonies, photobooth, and a handful of the video oral histories.

Access Restrictions: Originally part of her dissertation for her Ph.D., the recordings document men at the California Institute for Men in Chino, California, who have HIV/AIDS. Videos range from personal reflections to creative interactions. As part of her art therapy series, the men elected to take courses with Wendy to explore the vastness of their lives– the good and the bad– to emotionally heal and prepare for a life outside of prison. The men can be seen across multiple titles in the collection, such as "Amen" and "One-on-One." Scope and Content Note: Created in response to the United Nations Second Special Session on Disarmament approaches, this project provides a space for the public to share their thoughts, fears, and wishes regarding Nuclear weapons and the rising issue of disarmament. Participants can say whatever they want; the Survey does not take an editorial stand on the issue. Disarmament Video Survey's primary goal is to encourage the public to think critically about their views on the complex issue.

Access Restrictions: Over 4 months in 2002, Wendy Clarke led a discussion and creative circle of young women, ages 14 to 17, at the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility. Done in conjunction with the California Arts Council and the California Youth Authority, participants learn about self-expression and achievement through filmmaking, mask making, and dancing. Scope and Content Note: Made in partnership with the HeArt project in Los Angeles, California, these videos were created with and by local teens. As a part of a series of multimedia workshops called "Exploring Histories: Personal Portraits & Community Stories by Los Angeles Teenagers," Wendy Clarke was the designated artist for Lincoln Memorial High School and Central High School Tri-C CDS, teaching the students basic concepts of filming and artistic expression. Many of the videos are shot from the teenagers' point of view, following them as they skateboard, talk about their lives, and listen to music.

Scope and Content Note: L.A. Link was a video peer support network for young people. In 1996, the project connected youth from diverse cultural backgrounds in Crenshaw and Santa Monica through a real-time network. Two years later, L.A. Link connected Jewish and Japanese American teens who had family members in concentration camps.

Scope and Content Note: The Link is an interactive video sculpture connecting two public places separated geographically. With one stage at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan and the other at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office building in Harlem, performers could sing, dance, stand up comedy, play music, or just talk, and their images would become intertwined with that of the other stage across the city. The images are combined using a special effects generator, superimposing one image over the other. In this, people participating in the piece can see themselves on a video monitor, but what is present on the screen differs from their physical experience, placing the participants in the dimension of "videospace".

Scope and Content Note: In 1977, Wendy Clarke shared her video diaries with her mother Shirley Clarke's graduate students at UCLA, which led five of them to create their own tapes. The format for the Love Tapes was a result of this session with the UCLA students: people watch other "love tapes" and then record their own by sitting in front of a camera and monitor so that they can look at themselves while they talk about love for three minutes. After recording their tape, the participant would view it and decide either to have it erased or to sign a release and add it to the collection. Between 1977 and 1989, over 2,500 tapes were made around the world, illustrating the vast range of interpretations, meanings, and memories prompted by the word "love." Through this process, Wendy Clarke found that video operates as both an apparatus for intimacy and a facilitator for self-examination. The project's scope revealed a rare glimpse of humanity communing through shared experience, albeit one mediated by video technologies of both recording and exhibition. Released on public television stations in the 1980s, the Love Tapes marked a milestone for the advancement of the medium. The Love Tapes have been exhibited extensively around the world since 1980, including shows at the Museum of Modern Art (1980), the World's Fair in New Orleans (1984), on KCET/28 TV in Southern California (1989), as part of a Wendy Clarke retrospective at Anthology Film Archive in New York City (2001) and most recently at LUX in London, England (2019).

It is in this video that Wendy saw the potential to use video as a tool for self-discovery since you could see yourself in real time captured on screen rather than having to wait and process film. After this video was finished, Wendy told her mother that she wanted a Portapak, starting her career with digital exploration.

Scope and Content Note: In coordination with the New-York Historical Society, Wendy Clarke sought out participants all over the city, from all five boroughs, from different age groups, socio-economic standings, professions, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and countries of origin, to talk about their lives in the city. By working with participants in their neighborhoods, Clarke also documents the sights and sounds of the city, adding depth to contemporary understandings of life in New York City. Stories told in the collection include participants' reflections about the city's changes, their social ties to its neighborhoods or organizations, their various professional responsibilities, or in some cases, their experiences in immigrating the city and the U.S.

Scope and Content Note: Wendy Clarke produced the One-on-One project while an artist-in-residence at the California Institute for Men in Chino, California. She provided tapes for inmates to send a video message to the outside world. Outsiders, specifically residents of the Crenshaw neighborhood and members of the Church in Ocean Park in Santa Monica, then selected tapes and composed video responses. The two in conversation were otherwise prohibited from communicating, leaving the tape as an enabler, allowing seemingly cursory exchanges to develop into profound observations on connection, (in)equality, and the realities of the prison industrial complex.

Scope and Content Note: Wendy Clarke collaborated with psychologist Ralph Bruneau on Growing Up Gay: Out Tapes, a 1995 project highlights LGBTQ stories. Scope and Content Note: Remembrance was introduced as part of the "What About AIDS?: Science, Art & Human Stories" exhibition at the Exploratorium in San Francisco in 1996. The project gave people the opportunity to express their feelings by videotaping personal stories about how HIV and AIDS had affected their lives. Throughout these videos, participants share stories of queer life and community in the mid-1990s, particularly in their intersections with HIV/AIDS.

Scope and Content Note: A Taoist cultivator herself, Clarke worked alongside Taoist doctors to document classes offered on subjects such as the Eight Pillars of Tao and Tao of Sexual Wisdom. Eventually, the videos would be used by the Taoists as a "library of tapes" which could be used by the people who wish to study Taoist thought for self-healing or the healing of others.
Tarzana Treatment Center, 1971

Access Restrictions: In 1971, Clarke worked with patients at the Tarzana Treatment Center. At this rehabilitation center, Clarke worked with patients who had HIV/AIDS by creating art workshops. Participants made masks, drew portraits, and put on theatrical performances that educated audiences about AIDS. Such performances offer guidance on safe sex practices, and shows how support can be given to those living with the diagnosis. Personal experiences are shared to exemplify the unjust treatment of those living with HIV/AIDS. These tapes must be viewed on-site at the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Telephone Conversation, 1977

Scope and Content Note: Video Rotation is an interactive video sculpture in which the stage (two large black circles) is set, and the audience enters to complete the scene. With one stage horizontal and the other vertical, two cameras rotate slowly on their axes around the participants. The two images are then superimposed, crafting a flying like sensation in the art. It was displayed at the Artpark in Lewiston, New York in 1982. This project inspired her later project, The Link.

Scope and Content Note: A collection of fun, interactive installations that allow participants to experience video in a new way. Bingo Bango Video Jango, a theatrical game show, starts the exhibit, then participants can interact with different installation pieces, including Frog, Bicycle, Elephant, Hopscotch, Fish, and Movable Painting. This hands-on experience with digital video creates a playground of experimentation and creative thinking surrounding video art.
