Papers of John J. Blaine, a Wisconsin progressive Republican state senator from Boscobel, 1909-1913, attorney general, 1919-1921, governor, 1921-1927, United States Senator, 1927-1933, and member of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, 1933-1934. The collection consists mainly of correspondence and eight volumes of speeches and relates chiefly to state finances and taxation, state social welfare matters, prohibition, law enforcement, education, politics, and, somewhat diffusely, the progressive movement. Over eighty percent of the papers relate to the six years of Blaine's governorship, and present a comprehensive picture of the legislation, political issues, and state administration during that period.
