John N. Daland Papers, 1897-1899, 1910-1955

Biography/History

John Norton Daland was born July 16, 1885 to Dr. and Mrs. William C. Daland in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He came to Milton in 1902 when his father became Milton College's second president. He graduated from Milton College in 1913 and earned his master's degree at the University of Wisconsin one year later. He began teaching Latin at Milton College and later taught history and headed the History Department there for many years. Professor Daland served as acting president on two occasions--during 1927-29 and 1939-40. He retired in 1956 because of poor health.

He married Nellie Furrow in 1914. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, and a son, Robert.
