International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen. Local 6: Records, 1901-1982

Scope and Content Note

The records are divided into seven categories representing the six predecessor locals and Local 6 itself. Files concerning the predecessor locals variously contain constitutions and by-laws, minutes, incomplete correspondence, membership records, financial records, and miscellany. Financial records in general consist of monthly and annual reports to the International (including numbers of members, wages, and estimates of labor conditions), income and expense ledgers, and financial miscellany. In general, the financial records cover the years 1955-1974. Although summary data was retained in the collection, detailed records concerning individual dues payments were returned to the donor in 1987.

The records for Local 6 are quite different. These files contain merger and administrative materials and correspondence files maintained by Frank L. Skibbie, Jr., business manager of Local 6 (formerly secretary of Local 17). Additional activities as an officer in the Wisconsin State Conference are documented that separately-catalogued manuscript collection. These records focus primarily on the merger and brief administrative problems which were encountered afterwards. The merger files consist of special minutes and correspondence. Administrative records include a constitution and subsequent correspondence, although there are no minutes for post--merger meetings of the local. The Skibbie files consist of selected records from several regional organizations with which he was involved. Included are correspondence and minutes of the Wisconsin Valley Masons Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee; minutes, correspondence, and contracts for the Wisconsin River Valley Trowel Trades Negotiating Committee; and several pension and benefit committees.
