Biography/History

Augustus (or August) G. Green was born 1 November 1859 in Kalich, West Prussia, and shortly thereafter moved to Berlin, Wisconsin, with his parents. His father soon died, and when he was 8 or 9 years old, Green moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin with his mother. Her death soon followed and the boy supported himself as a clerk in the grocery store owned by Wash Stone. He lived with the Stone family and also attended White School. In 1880 Green began his own meat market on Main Street, and at times, worked as a logger and as a lumber and coal merchant. He worked hard, and eventually built his own home and an entire block of brick buildings on Main Street.

Green married Theresa Peickert, daughter of Emanuel and Elizabeth (Weisen) Peickert, on 18 June 1885. Her father was a local blacksmith, and also worked on the railroad when it was built in Stevens Point. Both Mr. and Mrs. Green were active members of the Catholic Church and its affiliated organizations. Green maintained a reputation for hard work and strict honesty in all of his business dealings. He was active in business until his death 12 September 1907.
