Part 1 (Mss 1168; PH 6789): Original Collection, 1942-1990 (bulk 1954-1990)1.0 cubic foot (5 archives boxes), 0.3 cubic feet of photographs (1 archives box and 1 oversize folder), and 10 4 x 8-feet panels in 2 oversize cases WRITINGS, includes Journals, 1954-1990, photocopied (originals are in the collection of the Archives of American Art), which detail Vanderbilt's personal and professional life. Other writings include published and unpublished book reviews; essays on photography and photographers such as Barbara Crane, Edward Weston, and others; columns for the Wisconsin Academy Review; lectures on photography; essays for “Century of Photographs in the Library of Congress”; technical manuals and reports; and an unpublished manuscript, “Wisconsin: A Pictorial History.” PUBLISHED PHOTOGRAPHS consists of Vanderbilt's photographs published in a book, journals, pamphlets, and other formats. EXHIBITS and WORKSHOPS consist of catalogs and other materials for solo and group shows of Vanderbilt's photographs. HONORS includes materials relating to a conference honoring Vanderbilt's work held at the Wisconsin Historical Society and an honorary doctorate awarded by the University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as biographical statements. Biographical material is also included in this series. CORRESPONDENCE is lightly represented and largely pertains to WHS business. Copies of letters from Roy Stryker regarding Vanderbilt's work at FSA are included, as is a copy of Vanderbilt's retirement letter. NEWS CLIPPINGS relate primarily to Vanderbilt's exhibits. VISUAL MATERIALS consists of photographs and posters of events honoring Vanderbilt and exhibits of his work and panels from the exhibit “There's Always a Way.” Additions to this series are expected; further processing is planned, and an exhibit and other events, “The Archive as a River: Paul Vanderbilt and Photography” took place in Fall 2014.
