Scope and Content Note

The papers are arranged in seven series: BIOGRAPHICAL, BROADCAST JOURNALISM, WRITINGS and PUBLICATIONS, DOCUMENTARIES and MEDIA PROJECTS, PROFESSIONAL and COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES, PHOTOGRAPHS, AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS, and document Loew's broadcast journalism career, her academic and teaching career, her writing, and her extensive involvement in professional and community organizations.

The BIOGRAPHICAL series is organized chronologically and includes materials from Loew's undergraduate and graduate studies, correspondence both professional and personal, and materials related to the memorial service for her father, Marvin Loew.

The BROADCAST JOURNALISM series documents Loew's career in broadcast journalism in La Crosse, Wisconsin; Spokane, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Madison, Wisconsin. Included are files relating to segments she produced for commercial and public television, news clippings, correspondence, and news notebooks. Also in this series are files for Way of the Warrior, a documentary about Native veterans, which aired nationally on PBS.

The WRITINGS and PUBLICATIONS series consists of files related to Loew's articles and book projects, including publication agreements, marketing materials, news clippings, reviews, and correspondence.

The DOCUMENTARIES and MEDIA PROJECTS series includes files related to other media projects, including documentaries on lacrosse (Sacred Stick), treaty rights, and an American Experience series that aired nationally on PBS concerning events in Native history (We Shall Remain). Loew's roles as a writer for the programming guide and moderator for a presentation related to the series are documented with drafts, press announcements, and scripts.

The PROFESSIONAL and COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES series documents Loew's academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including service on UW committees; research and community outreach grants; service in professional organizations, including board of directors involvement; other advisory boards and committees; participation in panels and workshops; and Loew's objections to materials about Native Americans used in an educational unit at her son's elementary school.

The PHOTOGRAPHS series includes images of Loew alone or with others (including Winona La Duke), photos related to her broadcast journalism career, or at various events. Also included are color snapshots from the Bad River (1985?) and Lac du Flambeau (LDF, 1986) tribal lands, and photos of individuals, including Nelson Sheppo, John Yahola, John Beaudin, and Jim Northrup.

The AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS series includes demo and audition tapes, and files related to various media projects.
