Abstract:
Papers of Gilbert H. Doane, an Episcopal priest, director of the University of Wisconsin Libraries, University archivist, and genealogist, primarily documenting his unpublished biography of Jackson Kemper, the first Episcopal bishop of Wisconsin. Included are original sermons by Kemper; calendars, a card index, and other access tools to the Kemper Papers held by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; and research notes and correspondence with members of the Kemper family and others such as Leslie H. Fishel and Clifford Lord of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. There are a few talks and articles about Kemper, but no draft of the full-length biography. Doane's clerical status is represented by general mailings from the Diocese of Milwaukee, mainly 1952-1968, and clippings and information about individual Episcopal congregations and Episcopal clergy in Wisconsin. There is also correspondence with the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society and photographs related to Grafton Hall and Nashotah House.
