Fritz Albert Films and Other Material, 1931, 1939-1999

Scope and Content Note

Fritz Albert produced films for the UW Department of Agricultural Journalism (now Life Sciences Communication), the Wisconsin Land Tenure Center, and for the partnership between the UW-Extension and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The films in this collection are described and organized alphabetically as follows: viewing copies and printing elements. The first part is made up of viewing copies available as 16 mm prints and/or videorecordings. Depending on the film, a note indicates if printing elements are available for that specific film title. The second part is made up of pre-print material, which includes printing elements for most of the film titles in the first part. However, viewing copies (either 16 mm prints and/or a video copy) are not available for all film titles and not all viewing copies have corresponding printing elements.

Film projects represented include: films produced for the UW-Extension and U.S. Department of Agriculture (late 1950s to 1960s); a series of films for the Wisconsin Land Tenure Center (1960s-1970s) regarding issues of tenure and agrarian reform/structure in Latin America (Bolivia, Chile, and Colombia); as well as several films dealing with land use policy, land development, natural resources, the environment, and agriculture/farming in Wisconsin.

Films on agriculture/farming in Wisconsin feature new farming techniques, crop production, and the research conducted at the UW agricultural experiment stations. Also included are films focusing on dairy history (e.g. Dairy Show Time, Darisonometer, Managed Milking, and Good Milking Pays), as well as the history of the UW College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). CALS and UW history films include a film about the Babcock test, the opening of Russell Lab, and films for the centennial celebrations of CALS in 1989 (The First Century: College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and Wisconsin's Agricultural Experiment Station in 1983.

Films with an international scope include: a film about The Gambia, the Institut Pertanian Bogor (Indonesian agricultural university), a 1987 Hungarian agriculture film, and films on Latin America.

The collection also includes some films from other UW staff such as Wolfgang B. Hoffmann (one of Albert's former students); Bill Tishler (UW Professor in landscape architecture); David Hestad, and others.

Film scripts are also available for many of the films; see M2001-057.
