Abstract:

Records of the Pew Center for Civic Journalism (PCCJ), a project established in 1993 by the Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by the Tides Center of San Francisco. The collection documents four special civic journalism initiatives, grants and other funded and unfunded activities, workshops, and files from publications and research. The greatest portion of the collection consists of papers, tearsheets, and video and tape recordings from prize-winning and grant-funded entries in the PCCJ's James K. Batten Award for Excellence in Civic Journalism competition. The competition ran yearly from 1995-2002; its exhibits document 800 civic journalism projects that occurred around the country. The project stimulated citizen involvement in community issues by helping print and broadcast news organizations experiment with ways to reconnect to their communities and engage their citizens in dialogue and problem solving. Subjects of the entries include race relations, crime, alcoholism, poverty, AIDS, sprawl, transportation, voting issues, election coverage, education, housing, health, and drugs and violence.
