Algoma, Wisconsin, Common Council Proceedings and Ordinances, 1873-1967

Scope and Content Note

Minutes of regular and special meetings including resolutions and petitions presented to the Council and notes on their disposition, and reports to the Council by city officials and committees. Among topics regularly discussed were bills submitted to the Council for approval, capital expenditures, bonds, easements, public buildings, school finances, public works, beverage licenses, and special taxes. The Council also canvassed election returns from municipal elections. Of note is a list of all residents at the time of incorporation as the Village of Ahnapee in 1873 (Volume 2) and the name change from Ahnapee to Algoma in 1897 (Volume 5).

Ordinances, 1873-1903 (volume 1), are in chronological order. With each change in incorporation a new numbering system was begun, therefore several ordinances are labeled as "1," "2," etc. Therefore, if the Minutes refer to an ordinance, it can be found by date rather than the ordinance number. Ordinances, 1910-1948 (part of volume 7), are in chronological and numerical order under one numbering system, #52-217.

The Minutes in this series are from the City of Algoma unless otherwise noted.
