Roscoe and Evelyn Churchill Papers, 1967-2014 (bulk 1970-2007)

Biography/History

The Buzzards Have Landed! The Real Story of the Flambeau Mine (2007) describes how Roscoe Churchill, a retired high school principal and farmer, and Evelyn Churchill, a retired teacher, became leaders in the fight to stop a multinational mining corporation, Kennecott Copper Corporation (Utah) owned by Rio Tinto Zinc (London), from drilling. The Churchills also helped found two community organizations, the Rusk County Citizen Action Group (RCCAG) in March 1976, and the Wisconsin Resources Protection Council in July 1982, which promoted awareness of the issues and raised funds to support opposition to the mine. Despite these efforts, the mine was opened in 1993 and operated until 1997.
