Brown County (Wis.). Council of Defense: Records, 1941-1946

Scope and Content Note

Records concerning eight World War II war bond drives conducted by the War Finance Committee of the Brown County Council of Defense. The records were compiled by Joseph Donovan, a member of the Committee, and consist of correspondence, statistics, and reports of war bond sales for each drive. The correspondence, which is mainly routine, concerns meetings and collection strategies. The statistics list bond sales by town, village, and city, and individual name. Of greatest interest are the mobile unit reports made by the collectors. These reports document those individuals who did not purchase bonds, their reasons, and the efforts made to persuade them to do so. Also included is a report of the Brown County schools' participation in the war effort, discussing scrap metal collection, the Junior Red Cross, and curriculum changes. There is also documentation of a “Citizenship Day” ceremony, including two speeches.
