Yi-Fu Tuan, born in Tianjin, China in 1930, was a professor of geography from 1959 to 1998, teaching at the University of New Mexico, University of Toronto, University of Minnesota, and University of Wisconsin. The Yi-Fu Tuan papers largely document Tuan's professional career as a leading figure in the field of humanistic geography, including his research, professional development, and personal correspondence, while he worked at the University of Toronto, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin, from 1966 to 1998.
