The Joseph Hammersley collection contains correspondence and affidavits related to uninvestigaed complaints against University of Wisconsin-Madison Police officers in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Hammersley was hired as a groundskeeper by the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1938. Over time his responsibilities expanded to night watch and investigations. Hammersley is often referred to as the University's first Chief of Police. Though he never held such a roll, by the 1940s he had become the face of law enforcement on campus. Hammersley was still employed by the University when he died in 1959. English
