Scope and Contents

The Abraxas Press records contain records from a small press located in Madison, Wisconsin. The collection contains general correspondence between Abraxas Press and people whose work was featured in the little magazine, ABRAXAS, as well as readers of the magazine. The series also includes the correspondence files of two of ABRAXAS's editors, Warren Woessner and Ingrid Swanberg, which contain mostly incoming correspondence from friends, poets whose work appeared in the magazine, and others associated with the press. There is correspondence with other presses, as well as pamphlets and publication notices put out by other presses.

Applications materials for three grants are also included: two NEA grants for specific issues of ABRAXAS, and one grant from the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission to fund poetry readings. The largest portion of the collection contains materials relating to issues of ABRAXAS published between 1970 and 1985. Included in the series are drafts and manuscripts, of various issues of the magazine, as well as correspondence pertaining to particular issues of the magazine. The series is arranged by issue number. Issues represented in the collection include Issue 4, Issues 6-10, Issue 12, Issue 14, Issues 16-21, and Issues 23-36.
