The Breaking the Bindings exhibit records primarily contain materials created during the process of organizing and running the "Breaking the Binding" book arts exhibit that was put on in 1983 by artist, bookmaker, and University of Wisconsin professor Walter Hamady and his students. The exhibit was shown at the Elvehjem Museum (now the Chazen). The materials include the entry forms for those accepted into the exhibit, correspondence between entrants and students working on the exhibit, organizational/planning documents, and more. Aside from material directly relating to the exhibit, there are also publications and information from Book Arts programs from all over the country that were used for research, as well as materials regarding the intent to create a Book Arts center in Madison.
