This collection contains various manuscripts of Gillian E. Hanscombe's "The Art of Life:
Dorothy Richardson and the Development of Feminist Consciousness." "The Art of Life" is
about Dorothy Richardson's autobiographical "Pilgrimage" series and the development of
feminist thought that can be ascertained from the work. Every folder in this collection has
to do with Hanscombe's "The Art of Life," and the progression of how the book developed can
be seen through its chronological order. One heavily edited typescript draft is separated
into four folders. The date of the typescript is unknown but it is presumably the earliest
draft in this collection. There are also three separate full galley proofs from multiple
dates in 1982. Each galley proof has editing annotation marks. There are also a small amount
of specimen pages in the collection.
