The Charles E. Gapen papers are a
collection of writings created by Charles Gapen and others who worked at the US Department
of Agriculture. Gapen worked in various roles within the USDA during his career, including
press writer, Chief of the Press Service of the USDA, Chief of Information at the USDA's
Department of Engineering, and as an Information Specialist at the USDA's Research Service.
Gapen also wrote poetry and prose in his free time, some of which was published. This
collection contains poetry and prose writings from Gapen, photographs and articles regarding
Gapen, and correspondence between Gapen and various professionals. The majority of the
collection, however, is press and radio releases written from within the USDA, mostly
ranging from 1943 to 1953. English .
