This collection includes approximately
1000 handwritten letters to and from Linda M. French, dated 1890 to 1921. Her writing, both
from Berlin and New York City, provide insight to city life in the early 20th century. She
frequently describes and critiques lectures, recordings, books, and especially musical and
theatrical performances of the time. From 1912 on, French shows an interest in the fight for
suffrage and communicates her involvement in and opinions on the movement. Many of the
responses are from friends and family members, notably her uncle, Calvin Stebbins; aunt,
Susan Burleigh; and a variety of members of the Beebe family who resided in Hampden,
Massachusetts. These letters provide details of family news and share instances of everyday
