Frederick Augustus Braun papers

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of correspondence and manuscripts of Dr. Frederick Augustus Braun. Many of the records relate directly to the publication of Braun's book, "Margaret Fuller and Goethe," including both correspondence with the publisher Henry Holt and Company, and with Braun's academic contacts. There are also forms and appointment letters related to Braun's graduate work at University of Illinois, and his faculty position at Princeton University. There are several handwritten, graded papers from Braun's time as a student, and a typed copy of the thesis he completed for his master's degree at Harvard University. A few items are dated decades after Braun's death and are the correspondence of Braun's widow, Cora Fischer Braun.

Folders II, III, and VI in this collection contain a first page with a handwritten contents list describing the records, and these lists were in the collection when it was acquired. Some photos and records are also accompanied by handwritten notes providing context or speculating about who may be featured in the photos, while also noting there are limited ways to confirm this information. Most folder titles are original to the collection as it was acquired. Photos that were originally contained in folder 7 are now housed separately in folder 8. Photos have been removed from their original housing, with scans of the original arrangement of the photos available via Special Collections staff.
