The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Fine Arts was created on December 7, 1962
by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. The school included four
departments: Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre Arts. The Department of Theatre Arts changed its
name to the Department of Theatre in 1975. The Department of Film was added in 1976. In fall
1978 the Master of Fine Arts in Performing Arts inaugurated the first stage of its program
encompassing graduate studies in the Departments of Theatre, Dance and Music. In 1984
Theatre and Dance were combined into one department.
The associate dean is the second in command of the School of Fine Arts, along with the
assistant deans who oversee the school's business affairs and facilities. The School of Fine
Arts did not have an associate dean from 1962 to 1975, from 1984 to 1988, and from 1993 to
1994. During these periods, the school only had a dean and assistant dean(s).
