The Department of Governmental Affairs was created to
investigate problems related to metropolitan areas. Included in the collection are annual
reports, correspondence, conference proceedings, research projects, photographs, and audio
cassette tapes covering politics in the urban environment. Most of the records are from the
late 1960s through the 1970s. The audio cassettes consist of interviews conducted around
1980 with leaders of Milwaukee's business, political, and cultural communities, referred to
within the interviews as "community knowledgables." Each interviewee was asked the same
questions concerning various challenges that the greater Milwaukee community would facing
during the 1980s.
